Fishing Tips

1. Missouri Conversionalist gives a great introduction to Fishing. The link is shown below:

1. When fishing high water in early spring choose a bait that can cover the water column and be fished at a variety of speeds. A spinner bait , rattle trap, and carolina rig are good choices.
2. When fishing high muddy water use a noisy bait such as a red rattle trap or a spinner bait with a large colorado or Indiana blade. The noise and vibration often will make a big difference in the number of strikes you will get.
3. Remember you can't catch bass while running your big motor. In tough bite situations maximize the amount of time your bait is in the water and stay close to where you have located bass.
4. A carolina rig is essential to have ready for all tournaments and using it will improve your success. It has saved the day for me in many bass tournaments and you can catch some very large bass using it. You rig it with a 3/4 bullet weight, followed by two beads, then a strong small swivel. Attach a 3-4 foot leader of at least 14 lb test and a 3/0 hook. Pumpkin lizards with a Chartreuse tail work in all waters I have fished in across America. Experiment with how quickly to move the bait and and retie your knot often as you should be pulling your lizard through stumps and rocks.
5. Get actively involved in teaching children how to fish and in taking them fishing. You will receive blessings beyond your imagination and you will be making a difference in the life of a child. Who knows, you may introduce the future Bass Masters Classic champion to fishing.
6. If you truely have a goal to be a become a better bass fisherman join a local bass club. You can learn something new from each person you fish with and they can learn from you. Always be willing to share your techniques and be willing to learn new ones.
7. Always keep a marine weather band radio in your boat and turn it on if bad weather is expected. Getting a few minutes jump start on an approaching storm may help you to avoid a life threatening situation. Once, a few years ago while on Lake Guntersville, I beached my boat and entered a small sewing shop as marble sized hail started to fall from the sky. Unfortunately, another bass fisherman a few minutes behind me in the same cove was electrocuted while getting out of his boat.
8. Bass fishing is a humbling sport. Keep at it and you will improve your bass fishing skill. Don't beat yourself up if you had a bad bass tournament or a fishless day on the water. Use adversity as a learning experience and you will learn from your mistakes. Remember, yesterday ended last night and today is your brand new day. Failure is an event and not a person. Go out and win that next bass tournament.
